11. Well, I’m not using it right now, but I think I really need to keep it handy just in case. 12. I’m just ringing to confirm my appointment with Mr. Green for this afternoon. 13. it’s a difficult question for me, since blue is not one of my favorite colors and the other one is too fancy for me.

14. well, if I were you I’d make such a worthwhile investment.

15. To tell you the truth, I’ve been tied up with my physics this week,

16. I’d like to place an ad for a used car in this Sunday edition of your paper

17. I’ll pick you up after work and together we’ll eat downtown. That’ll give us plenty of time to go to the concert at ease

18. I’m attending an evening course given by Pro. Nelson. Why don’t you give me your question and let me ask him instead?

Conversation One

Mary , I heard that you are suffering form toothache these days. How’s that with you now?

It’s gone, thanks. I went to the dentist last night, and he took care of me.

What exactly is troubling you then?

19.The last tooth on the upper right hand side. It’s severely decayed and finally I had it filled at the dentist’s.

I hate having my teeth filled. It’s not just the pain I hate. I also hate the sound of drilling. So do i. I’d rather have a tooth pulled than filled.

Have you ever had one of our teeth pulled? No, but the one the dentist just filled will have to come our someday. He says it can’t be filled again.

Teeth keep causing trouble. And nobody really does anything about it. I can’t understand why. They can put men onto the moon, but they can’t keep people from having trouble with

teeth.

20.They can give somebody a different heart. Why can’t they give him different teeth?

I’ve heard they are working on that. 21. My dentist says they are working on tooth transplant right now.

But on second thought, I’m not sure I’d want to eat with some other person’s teeth.

Well, that is not how it works. The idea is to develop a plastic tooth that can be placed into the hole where your won tooth came out. Really? It sounds like a good idea. Conversation Two

John, I want to ask if you know anything about hotels on the Costa Brava.

Why, no. I’m afraid I can’t be very much help to you there.

Well, 22. it is just that we have been thinking of taking the family to Spain this summer and 23. at this rather late stage we are trying to organize ourselves a suitable hotel. But I thought that you had been to the Costa Brava.

It’s certainly a bit late. But have you looked at the ads?

Well, yes. As a matter of fact, I was reading one ad only this morning in the Sunday paper which sounded marvelous. For a hotel ?

Yes. Just outside Barcelona. 24. It said that this hotel was right on the beach, and that’s essential as far as we’re concerned. I know just how it is .

And all the rooms have balconies facing the sea and overlooking the beach. Expensive?

No, that was the remarkable thing about it. You know, even allowing for a bit of exaggeration in the ad. It seemed to have a lot to offer.

Well, you never know.

Well, yes, so what should you say?

Of course, 25. the only way to find out for certain is to go and try it. And that’s taking rather a risk.

Passage One

Good afternoon, and welcome once again to “The world we never knew”. We left off last week talking about how the tool-making industry of early men also stimulated the growth of the brain . the possession of a good brain has become one of the factors that enabled humans to make tools at the start. But the use of tools became, in turn, a driving force towards the evolution of an even better brain. 27. The characteristics of good memory, a long head, and innovativeness that were needed for tool-making varied in strength form one individual to another. Again , these circumstances trimmed the human stock, expanding the centers of the brain in which past experiences were recorded, future actions were expected, and new ideas were considered. As a result, from generation to generation the brain grew larger. The evolution of speech may have been the most important factor of all. When early man mastered the loom of

language, his progress accelerated dramatically. Through the spoken word a new invention in tool-making, for example, could be communicated to everyone. In this way the innovativeness of the individual enhanced the survival prospects of his fellows, and 28. the creative strength of one became the strength of all. More importantly, through language the ideas of one generation could be passed onto the next, so that each generation not only inherited the genes of its ancestors but also their collective wisdom.

Passage Two

A new plan for getting children to and from school is being started by a local government in Eastern England. This could end the worries of many parents fearful for their children’s safety on the roads.

Until now the local government have only been prepared to provide bus services for children living more than three miles from

their school. Or sometimes less if special reasons existed. Now it has been decided that if a group of parents ask for help in organizing transport they will be prepared to go ahead, as long as the arrangement will not lose money and children taking part will be attending their nearest school.

The new plan is to be tried out this term for children living at Milton who attend Impington school 30. The local government have agreed to offer a sum of money for a bus service from Milton to Impinton and back. Between 50 and 60 parents have said they would like their children to take part. A government official has said the cost to parents should be less than $20 a term .

31. They have been able to arrange the service at a low cost because there is already an agreement with the bus company for a bus to take children who live further away to Impington. The same bus would now just make one more journey to pick up the Milton

children.

Passage Three

The proverb “ One man’s meat if another’s poison” applies to table manners as well. To put if more simply, in Britain you mustn’t lift your soup bowl to your mouth. In Japan, however, lifting your bowl to your mouth is an efficient way of drinking your soup. 32. And in Japan you need not worry about making a noise when you drink it. Noisily drinking your soup or any other food you happen to be eating is quite acceptable and shows that your are enjoying it. That’s not true in Britain, however. In Britain, we try not to put our hands or elbows on the table at all during a meal. 33. In Mexico, however, guests are supposed to keep their hands on the table throughout a meal. But it is in the Arab countries where we really must be aware of what we do with our hands. 34. You see, in Arab countries you must not , in any circumstances, eat with your left hand. This is considered very, very impolite.

So what should you do if you visit another country? Well, you need not worry. The details of table manners may vary but usually the aim is to avoid eating in a way that is disgusting and to look after other people’s needs as well as your own. 35. So be guided by your host and hostess and do as they do, not as you do at home.
