The children grow vegetables and take care of animals, but they are not playing “Farmville (开心农场)” online. Students at Gateway International School have started farming a small piece of land in the school. The students in the school are from different countries, such as Malaysia and the Philippines.
“To make the children self-reliant and develop friendship between children from different countries, we asked them to grow vegetables. They were excited about the idea,” said Grace Alwyn, the head teacher of the school. “They give part of the harvest to us and we cook it for them. We are planning to ask the parents to buy the vegetables planted by the children. This will also teach them the importance of money.”
The students are also encouraged to keep pets. They feed the animals in the morning and check on them through the day. It’s a good way for them to learn to be responsible.
Pritesh, a student in Grade 8, said, “I understand how farmers work. As we grow the vegetables ourselves, we don’t feel like wasting them. It is a very interesting hobby.”

We’d like to agree with the recent report comparing the difference between a computer and a TV. When you use one you turn your brain on, with the other you turn it off.
Your brain may not be the only thing the TV turns off. It seems that men who watch a lot of TV are more sedentary(久坐不动的), eat more food and are generally much fatter. Similar results have been found for women. Experts think that watching TV means that not only are you sedentary, but you have to watch food advertisements inducing(引诱)you to eat more. The food that you are being induced to eat may not be good enough for your health.
If you are a couch potato, here are some suggestions:
●Tape(粘) a piece of paper to the back of your remote control(遥控器)or TV Guide, and every time you watch a show, note how long you sit there and what you eat.
●Review the record after a week. This can be a shock.
●Don't have a TV in your bedroom; having a TV in your bedroom greatly increases viewing time and if you eat while viewing, the results are obvious(明显的).
●Think of a healthy way instead of watching TV that you like. This can be as simple as walking the dog or walking to visit a neighbor regularly.
After a few months you are likely to be surprised about how much more time you seem to have and how much better you feel.
26. The author of this passage believes ________.
A. using a computer turns your brain on B. watching TV can keep your brain healthy C. the more you watch TV, the more you use your brain
D. only after turning off a TV do you start using your brain
27. The underlined phrase “a couch potato” best describes a person who is ________. A. too fat because of eating too many potatoes B. small and round because of sitting for a long time
C. too short because of lying on the couch all the time D. lazy and spends too much time watching TV on a sofa 28. Which of the following is suggested by the author?
A. Doing exercise during TV ads. B. Watching TV at a fixed(固定的)time C. Recording TV viewing time. D. Having more fruit while watching TV. 29. From the last paragraph we can learn that ________. A. you will like a computer better than a TV set B. the author wants to tell you to buy a TV set
C. the author’s suggestion doesn’t work D. you will probably be surprised at how life changes. 30. The best title for the passage should be ________.
A. A Couch Potato B. Differences between a TV and a computer

One possible version: Dear Alice,
As a teenager, I met the same problem as you. But now I can get along better with my mother. Here are some ideas for you.
Your mother talks much, because she cares about you. Maybe it's not a good way, but it shows your mother's love. Therefore, I think you should listen to her. If your opinions are different from your mother's, you can communicate with her, and tell her what you're thinking about.
If your mother doesn't take your advice, just keep silent and give her a smile. I hope what I say here can help you a lot. Yours, Han Me
