A Day in the Life of an Elementary Student
Hi there! My name is Sammy and I'm a 3rd grader at Oakwood Elementary School. Today I'm going to tell you all about what a regular day is like for me at school.
My day starts pretty early since the school bell rings at 8:15am. That means I have to get up around 6:45 so I have time to get dressed, eat breakfast, brush my teeth, and get my backpack ready. My mom drives me to school and I like to get there a little early so I can play on the playground with my friends before the bell rings.
When the bell rings, we all line up by class and wait for our teacher, Mrs. Parker, to come get us. Once we're all seated at our desks, Mrs. Parker does attendance and then we say the Pledge of Allegiance together. After that, we go over the schedule for the day written on the whiteboard.
The first subject we usually have is reading. Sometimes Mrs. Parker reads to us from a book, and other times we take turns reading aloud from our reading workbooks. We learn lots of vocabulary words and practice things like finding the main idea,
making inferences, and identifying story elements like the setting and characters.
After reading, we switch to math. Math is one of my favorite subjects because I like working with numbers. We start every math lesson by going over a few practice problems together on the whiteboard. Then Mrs. Parker teaches us a new concept or strategy, and we work through some examples. Finally, we practice what we learned by doing problems in our math workbooks.
Around 10:30, it's time for our first recess of the day! We go outside to the playground for 20 minutes to run around, play games, and just get some fresh air and exercise. It feels so good to take a break from sitting at our desks. When the recess bell rings, we line up again and head back to class.
The period after recess is usually when we have science or social studies. In science, we learn about topics like plants, animals, matter, forces, and the human body. We do a lot of hands-on activities and experiments which is really fun. In social studies, we study things like geography, history, economics, and cultures around the world.
Around noon, we get ready to go to lunch. We line up again, get our lunchboxes from our cubbies, and walk to the cafeteria
together as a class. In the cafeteria, we can choose the hot lunch option or eat a packed lunch from home. There are rectangular tables that fit about 12 students each. I like to sit with my friends Lily, Jack, Emma, and Carlos. We have 30 minutes to eat and then we can go outside to the playground for another 20 minute recess.
After lunch and recess, we head back to our classroom for \"Specials\" class. The Specials classes rotate each day between art, music, P.E., library, and computer lab. Art is probably my favorite Special because I love being creative and using all the fun art supplies like paints, clay, and colored pencils.
Finally, it's time for our last core subject of the day, which is usually language arts. In language arts, we work on skills like spelling, grammar, writing stories or essays, and practicing cursive handwriting. Sometimes Mrs. Parker has us do creative things like writing our own poems or short stories.
At around 2:45pm, it's time to start packing up and getting ready for dismissal. Mrs. Parker has us clean up our desks, gather our things, and line up one last time. At 3:00pm, the bell rings and we're finally dismissed for the day! Some kids ride the bus home, while others get picked up by parents or walk home if they live close by.
Whew, as you can see, we stay pretty busy all day long at school! By the time I get home, I'm tired but happy. After having a snack, I'll do my homework, play outside for a while, have dinner with my family, take a bath, and finally get ready for bed. Then I'll rest up to do it all over again tomorrow!
Being a student sure is hard work, but I love learning new things every single day. My favorite part is just getting to spend time with my teacher and all my friends. I can't wait to grow up and maybe even become a teacher myself someday! Thanks for letting me tell you about a typical day in my life as an elementary school student.
