Child labor — the employment of children in industry, often against their will----has been a problem for many years. Over a hundred years ago, Charles Dickens shocked many readers when he described the conditions under which young children worked in British factories. The conditions Dickens described continue almost unchanged today in many parts of the world. The only difference is that today employment of children is confined to small industries and family business.

Girls suffer more from child labor practices than boys. Many of them are forced to start work when they are only ten years old. Although the work they are given to do is often light, it is often harmful to the health. Recently, children as young as six years were found to be working in Asian factories, and the children were working from eight to fourteen hours a day in overcrowded and unhealthy working conditions. Sometimes whole family group is employed, with the payment going to a parent or older relative, the children not only receive nothing or very little for their long hours of work, but also they are prevented from attending school. Therefore, when they become older they are unable to do any other kind of work.

The solution to the problem of child labor is clearly better laws to protect young children, greater supervision of industry and heavier fines for those who break the laws. Only in this way can young boys and girls be allowed to enjoy the most valuable time of their lives -- childhood. 41. Which of the following statement is true according to the first paragraph?

5

A. because they are forced to

B. in order to be skillful in a certain kind of work C. in order to earn money for education D. in order to be paid well

45. To solve the problems of child labor, the writer suggests_________.

A. punishing lawbreakers with severer fines, improving children's working conditions, and confining employment of children to light industries

B. improving laws of protecting children's interests, looking over factories more closely, and punishing lawbreakers with severer fines C. improving laws of protecting children’s interests, giving them lighter work, and raising their payment

D. confining employment of children to small industries and family businesses, looking over factories more closely, and improving the system of education

Task 3

Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 unfinished statements or questions,

numbered 46 through 50. For each statement there are four choices marked A, B, C

and D. You should make the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

When a customer finds that an item he bought is faulty or does not live up to the manufacture’s claim for it, the first step is to present the warranty (保单) or any other helpful records at the stores of purchase. In most cases, this action will produce results. However, if it does not, there are various means the consumer may use to gain satisfaction.

A simple and common method used by many consumers is to complain directly to the store manager. In general, the \"higher up\" the consumer takes his complaint, the faster he can expect it to be settled. In such a case, it is usually settled in the consumer's favor, if he has a just claim. Complaining is usually most effective when it is done politely but firmly, especially when the consumer can demonstrate what is wrong with the item. If this cannot be done, he will succeed best by presenting specific information as to, what is wrong, rather than by making general statements. The store manager may advise the consumer to write to the manufacturer. If so, the consumer should do this, stating the complaint as politely as possible, but if a polite complaint does not achieve the desired result, the consumer can go a step further. He can threaten to take the seller to court or report the seller to a private or public organization responsible for protecting the consumer’s rights.

46. When a customer finds that his purchase has a fault in it, the first thing he should do is to_____.

A. threaten to take the matter to court

B. show some written proofs of the purchase to the store C. complain personally to the manager

D. write a firm letter of complaint to the store of purchase

47. If the consumer wants a quick settlement of his problem, it is better to complain to_______ A. the store manager B. a shop assistant

C. the manufacturer D. a public organization

48. Suppose a customer finds fault in his tape recorder, what would he say to the store manager?

6

A. This tape recorder doesn’t work.

B. The tape recorder is not so good as before.

C. The sound coming out of the right speaker is unclear. D. This is the warranty; you must change a new one for me. 49. The most effective complaint can be made by_________. A. saying firmly that the item is of poor quality B. showing the faulty item to the manufacturer C. asking politely to change the item

D. explaining exactly what is wrong with the item 50. The passage tells us ________.

A. how to avoid buying a faulty item

B. how to make an effective complaint about a faulty item C. how to deal with complaints from customers

read the materials carefully and do the tasks as you are instructed.

Task 1

Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 unfinished statements, numbered

36 through 40. For each statement there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should make the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Most of us grow up taking certain things for granted. We tend to assume that experts and religious leaders tell us “the truth”. We tend to believe that things advertised on television or in newspapers can’t be bad for us.

However, encouragement of critical thinking in students is one of the goals of most colleges and universities. Few professors require students to share the professors’ own beliefs. In general, professors are more concerned that students learn to question and critically examine the arguments of others, including some of their own beliefs or values. This does not mean that professors insist that you change your beliefs, either. It does mean, however, professors will usually ask you to support the views you express in class or in your writing.

If your premises(前提) are shaky, or if your arguments are not logical, professors personally point out the false reasoning in your arguments. Most professors want you to learn to recognize the premises of your arguments, to examine whether you really accept these premises, and to understand whether or not you draw logical conclusions. Put it this way: Professors don’t tell you what to think; they try to teach you how to think.

On the other hand, if you intend to disagree with your professors in class, you should be prepared to offer a strong argument in support of your ideas. Argument just for the sake of arguing usually does not promote a critical examination of ideas. Many professors interpret it as rudeness. 36. In the first paragraph, the writer tries to tell us that people______. A. easily accept certain things without a second thought B. grow up through learning certain things in life C. are forming their views during their growth

D. have strong beliefs in authorities while getting old

39. To help students develop their critical thinking, professors mainly teach them_______. A. choice of their premises B. the way to think independently C. skills of drawing conclusions D. different kinds of argument 40. According to the writer, the right way to argue is to_______. A. argue mainly for the sake of arguing B. prove it with a good conclusion

C. support your idea with sound reasoning D. examine others’ ideas critically Task 2

Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 unfinished statements, numbered

12

with a single line through the center.

It would be difficult to have a society like ours without public goods such as defense, transportation, and other services. A public good is one that a person can use without reducing the use of it for another person. One of the best examples of a public good is national defense. One person can benefit from our national defense without reducing another person’s benefits. In fact, it is difficult to keep any person in our society from enjoying the benefits of national defense.

The market system does not work well in producing public goods. This is because a person who refuses to pay for a public good cannot be kept from using it. Suppose that the neighbors in a high crime area decide to hire a police force. Each neighbor, except Mrs.Smith, agrees to pay $100 a year for it. Mrs. Smith refuses to pay because she knows that if all the others pay the $100, the police will guard the area anyway. So Mrs. Smith can enjoy the services of the police force without paying $100. The market system has no way to deal with this type of problem. For this reason, we cannot ask each person to make a direct payment in the form of product price. Therefore, we collect money for public goods by using taxes.

41. According to the passage, public goods are_______. A. services enjoyed by all people B. what we can buy and sell in public C. products that we make for national defense D. taxes paid by the people involved

42. The writer gives the example of national defense in paragraph 2 in order to show that______. A. there will be no safety if there is no national defense B. all the people should be responsible for national defense C. a public good is a shared benefit for the whole society D. some public goods are more important than others 43. The person who does not pay for a public good________. A. keeps himself from using its benefit B. cannot enjoy its benefit at any time C. fails to keep its benefit from being used D. enjoys its benefit all the same

44. In the third paragraph the author explains_______.

A. what role the market system plays in producing public goods B. how weak the market system is in producing public goods C. why some people refuse to pay for public goods D. what we can do to make use of the market system

45. From the passage we can learn that the purpose of collecting taxes is to_______. A. ensure the continuous supply of public goods

B. reduce the difference between the rich and the poor C. get extra money to support public goods D. remind people of their duty

Both problems are long-term ones because actions taken now show their results slowly over many years. They are also urgent because delays in action can lead to great suffering and social problems. The question seems to be difficult to handle for most people. However, a person can be a protector of environment in everyday life if he takes actions to save the environment right now. With the development of technology, cars make transportation easier and quicker than before, but we can’t ignore the disadvantages brought to us by more and more cars in use. For example, we are consuming gasoline (汽油), which is a non-renewable(无法更新的)resource, and will soon be gone. Moreover, the exhausted gas from cars pollutes our air, and our health is therefore threatened by air pollution which has a big potential effect on our daily life. So we can consider walking, taking buses, carpooling (合用汽车), instead of driving cars alone. This seems to be a very slow process that can’t be so effective if it’s taken by a single person. But when more and more people become aware of the importance and positively take it as their personal responsibilities, the condition of the air will be improved to a great extent. 46. According to the writer, the main problem to our environment today is ________. A. the increase of population C. the more serious air pollution

B. the limited energy resources D. the development of technology

47. From the passage, we can know that_________.

A. effective measures can be taken mainly by the government B. taking measures now can soon improve the environment

C. immediate measures can cause great suffering and social problems

D. every single person’s action has some effect on environment protection. 48. The author’s main purpose in writing this passage is most probably to_______. A. complain about people’s slow actions to protect the environment B. advise people to take actions to protect the environment C. show himself to be an active environment protector

D. point out the bad effects of technologies on protecting environment 49. The author believes that carpooling________. A. can give help to those without cars B. can save people money and time

C. can save energy resources and reduce air pollution D. can promote friendship among drivers 50. The passage is mainly about______. A. energy resources saving C. population control

B. environment protection D. air pollution

Dear Manager, After a serious consideration, I have made a definite decision to resign from the department, effective on December 31. I think you will readily understand my decision in view of my personal financial problems. I feel that greater opportunities would be available to me to cope with these problems in some other companies.

My three years working with you and my colleagues have been very pleasant and have provided a great challenge. I enjoyed working with you, and I regret very much the necessity of leaving the department only because of my extreme economic pressure.

Before my leaving, I will certainly help in training the person you select to fill my position. If at any future time a problem should arise, I shall be happy to assist in any way I can.

Respectfully yours,

Stephen Li

In American business meetings, people are expected to participate verbally (口头上). Or else others may think that they are uninterested in the meeting. Active participation involves the following:

1. Start a discussion, bringing up new ideas and topics, and making suggestions. 2. Asking people for opinions, information and explanations.

3. Repeating ideas and explanations for those who can’t understand you.

19

4. Encouraging people to speak by accepting different points of view. If an employee appears to be passive at a meeting, Americans may feel that the person is not contributing to the meeting. “Brainstorming\" is a common practice at American meetings. The purpose of brainstorming is to express as many ideas as possible on a given question or problem. This technique is used to collect all the ideas of the group, without stopping to discuss the value of each suggestion. First people brainstorm freely; then they narrow down and get rid of ideas or suggestions that are not workable. Brainstorming is a creative process that demands full verbal participation. This method of creating, exploring, and solving problems is foreign to many people who are not culturally comfortable with \"blurting out\" (不加思考地说出) ideas.

The common practice \"brainstorming\" is used to_________. A. ask as many questions as possible

B. discuss or evaluate the value of each question C. provide more opportunities to attend meetings D. get the most ideas about a problem

39. What does the word \"foreign” (Line 6, last Para) mean?

D. If you don’t give your ideas at meetings, you’ll be regarded as an uninteresting person. Task 2

Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 unfinished statements or questions, numbered 41 through 45. For each statement there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should make the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Ideas about education are changing in the United States. Education today is not just a high school diploma (学历) or a degree. Many adults are not interested in going to college. They are interested in other kind of learning. For them, learning does not end with a diploma. Continuing education gives these adults the opportunities to increase their knowledge about their own field or to learn about a new field. It also gives them a chance to improve their old skills or to learn new ones. Scientists, mechanics(技师) and barbers(理发师)can take classes to improve their work skills. If they know more or learn more, they can get a better job or earn more money.

Continuing education classes give more adults the chance to learn new skills. There is usually a large variety of classes to choose from; typing, foreign cooking, photography, auto repair, furniture repair, or swimming. There are only some of the classes available. Some adults take

20

classes for fun or because the class will be useful for them. Other adults take continuing education classes to improve their own lives because they want to feel better about themselves.

Almost any community college or public school system has a continuing education program. There are classes in schools, community buildings or churches. Most classes are in the evenings, so working people can attend. The classes are usually small, and they are inexpensive. 41. The new idea about education in the U. S. is that_________. A. everyone should get a college degree B. it’s no use for adults to go to college

C. a high school diploma is the end of education

D. adults should go on learning after graduating from school 42. What’s the purpose for adults to continue their education? _____ A. Enlarge their knowledge and learn new skills. B. Catch up the opportunities to get a higher degree. C. Learn more basic knowledge to get a diploma. D. Make themselves live a more comfortable life. 43. Which of the following statement is TRUE?

A. There are only a few continuing education classes available for adults.

B. Only those who want to get more money should go on with their education. C. People take continuing education classes for different reasons. D. All the people getting continuing education can get a good job. 44. Usually, the continuing education program is given_________. A. in a small size and expensively B. only for working people

C. only in community buildings or churches D. by community colleges and public schools

45. The best title for the passage would be_________. A. Continuing Education Classes B. The Importance of a College Degree C. A Good Way to Earn More Money

You should make the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

When you enter the supermarket, you see shelves full of goods. You walk between the shelves. You carry a shopping basket and put your food in it. You probably hear soft music as you walk. If you hear fast music, you walk quickly. The supermarket plays slow music. You walk slowly and have more time to buy things.

Maybe you go to the meat department first. There is some meat on sale, and you want to find it. The manager of the supermarket knows where customers enter the meat department. The cheaper meat is at the end of the meat department, away from where the customers enter. You have to walk by all the expensive meat before you find the cheaper meat. Maybe you will buy some of the expensive meat instead of the meat on sale.

The dairy (乳制品) department sells milk and milk products such as butter and cheese. Many

customers like milk that has only a little butterfat in it. One store has three different jars of low fat milk. One says\"1 percent (1%) fat\" on the container. The second says \"99 percent (99%) fat free\". The third says \"Low Fat\" in big letters and \"1%\" in small letters. As you can see, all the milk has the same amount of fat. The milk is all the same. The amount of milk in each container is also the same. However in this store the three containers of milk don’t cost the same. Maybe the customer will buy the milk that costs the most.

Most of the food in supermarket is very pleasing. It all says \"Buy me!\" to the customers. The expensive meat says “Buy me!\" as you walk by. The expensive milk jar says “Buy me! I have less fat.”

Part III Reading Comprehension(1) (30 points, 2 points each)

Directions: This part is to test your reading ability. There are 3 tasks for you to fulfill. You should read the materials carefully and do the tasks as you are instructed.

Task l

A historic change is taking place in higher education. Professors are being held responsible as never before for how well they serve students. It has become as common in colleges and universities for students to grade professors as for professors to grade students.

In fact, student ratings have become the most widely used and, in many cases, the only source of information on teaching effectiveness. In comparing three studies of the same 600 four-year colleges, it was found that the number of colleges using student ratings to evaluate

26

teachers had climbed from 29 per cent to 68 per cent. No other method of evaluation approached that degree of usage, and other studies have found similar results.

One reason that student evaluations of teachers have become so popular is that they are easy to administer and to score. But they also are easy to abuse. If they are to shed meaningful light on teacher's performance, the rating must be used in a way that reflects at least some of what we've learnt about them from research and from experience.

Research and experience have shown us, for example, that student ratings should never be the only basis for evaluating teaching effectiveness. There is much more to teaching than what is evaluated on student rating forms. When ratings are used, we know that students should not be expected to judge whether the materials used in a course are up to date or how well the teacher knows the subject matter of the course. These judgments require professional background and are best left to the professor's colleagues. On the other hand, students should be asked to estimate what they have learned in a course, and to report on such things as a professor's ability to communicate at the student's level, professional behavior in the classroom, relationship with students, and ability to arouse interest in the subject.

36. The central idea of the passage is that____________.

A. student ratings are the only source of information on teaching effectiveness

C. besides student ratings, there are other methods to evaluate teachers D. student ratings are very popular and should be properly used

A. Student evaluations of teachers are popular because they are very accurate.

B. In student ratings, students should not be asked questions that require professional background.

C. Student ratings can be used under any circumstances.

D. All colleges are inclined to use student ratings to evaluate teachers. 38. In student ratings all the following questions can be asked except _____. A. Can the teacher make himself easily understood? B. How does the teacher deal with students? C. Is what is taught new?

D. Are students interested in what is taught?

39. The sentence in the third paragraph \"But they also are easy to abuse\" means ____. A. teachers are easy to be misunderstood B. teachers are easy to be wronged

C. student ratings can easily be put to wrong use

D. student ratings can easily be made use to attack teachers 40. The word \"approach\" in paragraph 2 means _____. A. be more than

Task 2

Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experiences? Strangely enough, the answer to both these questions is yes. To some extent our intelligence is given us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a

27

B. come near C. equal D. better than

genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than a child who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of a person's intelligence are fixed at birth, but whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.

It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from the population, it is likely that their degrees of intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.

Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We could soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all, are likely to have similar degrees of intelligence.

41. The writer is in favor of the view that man's intelligence is given to him _______. A. at birth

B. through education

C. both at birth and through education D. neither at birth nor through education

42. If a child is born with low intelligence, he can ______. A. never become a genius B. still become a genius if he should be given special education C. exceed his intelligence limits in rich surroundings

D. not reach his intelligence in his life

43. In the second paragraph \"if we take two unrelated people at random from the population.\" means \"if we _____.\"

A. pick up any two persons

B. choose two persons who are relatives C. take out two different persons

D. choose two persons with different intelligence

44. The example of the twins going to a university and to a factory separately shows ___. A. the importance of their intelligence B. the role of environment on intelligence C. the importance of their positions D. the part that birth plays

45.The best title of this passage can be ______. A. Dependence on Environment B. Intelligence C. Surroundings

D. Effect of Education

Task 3

The motor vehicle has killed and disabled more people in its brief history than any bomb or weapon ever invented. Much of the blood on the street flows essentially from uncivil behavior of drivers who refuse to respect the legal and moral rights of others. So the massacre on the road may be regarded as a social problem.

In fact, the enemies of society on wheels are rather harmless people - just ordinary people acting carelessly, you might say. But it is a principle both of law and common morality that carelessness is no excuse when one's actions could bring death or damage to others. A minority of the killers go even beyond carelessness to total negligence.

Researchers have estimated that as many as 80% of all automobile accidents can be attributed to the psychological condition of the driver. Emotional upsets can distort drivers' reactions, slow their judgment, and blind them to dangers that might otherwise be evident. The experts warn that it is vital for every driver to make a conscious effort to keep one's emotions under control.

Yet the irresponsibility that accounts for much of the problem is not confined to drivers. Street walkers regularly violate traffic regulations, they are at fault in most vehicle-walker accidents, and many cyclists even believe that they are not subject to the basic rules of the road.

Significant legal advances have been made toward safer driving in the past few years. Safety standards for vehicle have been raised both at the point of manufacture and through periodic road-worthiness inspections. In addition, speed limits have been lowered. Due to these measures, the accident rate has decreased. But the accident experts still worry because there has been little or no improvement in the way drivers behave. The only real and lasting solution, say the experts; is to convince people that driving is a skilled task requiring constant care and concentration. Those who fail to do all these things present a threat to those with whom they share the road.

46. The author's main purpose in writing this passage is _________.

A. to discuss traffic problems and propose possible solutions

B. to promote understanding between street walkers and motor drivers C. to prove that motor invention is a very dangerous one

D. to warn the drivers of the importance of safe driving

47. According to the passage, traffic accidents may be regarded as a social problem because _______.

A..civilization brings much harm to people

B. people usually pay little attention to law and morality C. automobiles have become most destructive to mankind

D. the lack of virtue is becoming more severe

48. The author mentions the psychological condition of the drivers, in order to _________.

A. show some of the inaccurate estimations by researchers

B. show how important it is for drivers to be emotionally healthy C. give an example so the various reasons for road accidents

D. illustrate the hidden tensions in the course of driving

49. Who are not mentioned as being responsible for the road accidents?__________

A. Mindless people walking on the road. B. Careless bicycle riders.

C. Irresponsible drivers.

D. Irresponsible manufacturers of automobiles.

50. Which of the following best reflects the author's attitude toward a future without traffic accident

III. Reading Comprehension(2) (5 points, 1 point each)

Task 4

Directions: In this task, there is a passage with 5 questions (51 through 55). Read the passage carefully. Then answer the question in the fewest possible words. The answer should be written after the corresponding numbers on the Answer Sheet.

The first English window was just a slit in the wall. It was cut long, so that it would let in as much light as possible, and narrow, to keep out the bad weather. However, the slit let in more wind than light. This is why it was called \"the wind's eye\". The word \"window\" itself comes from two Old Norse words for wind and eye.

Before windows were used, the ancient halls and castles of northern Europe and British were dark and smoky. Their great rooms were high, with only a hole in the roof to let out the smoke from torches and cooking fires.

As time went on, people wanted more light and air in their homes. They made \"the wind's eyes\" wider. But to keep out the bad weather, they covered the windows with canvas.

51. Why was the first English window cut long? The English window was cut long to ________. 52. Why was the first English window made narrow? The English window was made narrow to______.

Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 unfinished statements or questions, numbered 36 through 40. For each statement there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should make the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

When I asked my daughter which item she would keep: the phone, the car, the cooker, the computer, the TV, or her boyfriend, she said \"the phone\". Personally, I could do without the phone entirely, which makes me unusual, because the telephone is changing our lives more than any other piece of technology.

Point 1 The telephone creates the need to communicate, in the same way that more roads create more traffic. My daughter comes home from school at 4:00 pm and then spends an hour on the phone talking to the very people she has been at school with all day. If the phone did not exist, would she have anything to talk about?

Point 2 The mobile phone means that we are never alone. \"The mobile saved my life,\" says Crystal Johnston. She had an accident in her Volvo on the A45 between Otley and Skipton. Trapped inside, she managed to make the call that brought the ambulance (救护车) to her rescue. Point 3 The mobile removes our secret. It allows marketing manager of Haba Deutsch, Carl Nicolaisen, to ring his sales staff all round the world at any time of day to ask where they are, where they are going, and how their last meeting went.

Point 4 The telephone separates us. Antonella Bramante in Rome says, \"We worked in separate offices but I could see him through the window. It was easy to get his number. We were so near, but we didn't meet for the first two weeks!\"

Point 5 The telephone allows us to reach out beyond our own lives. Today we can talk to several complete strangers simultaneously (同时地) on chat lines (at least my daughter does. I wouldn't know what to talk about). We can talk across the world. We can even talk to astronauts (if you know any) while they're space-walking. And, with the phone line hooked (连接) up to the computer, we can access (进入)the Internet, the biggest library on Earth. 36. The best title for the passage is ______.

The market investigation (市场调研)is indispensable to sales promotion. They are closely related as the lips and teeth, so to speak. What you produce is for sale on the market. It would be impossible to succeed in selling a product without first investigating the market.

In the international market, goods on sale coming from different countries and suppliers (厂商)are always facing keen competition. Under such circumstances, they will try everything possible to familiarize themselves with the market conditions, in making investigations, we should get information about what similar items the competitors are offering on the market, what prices they are quoting (报价),what features their products have, who are their regular customers, etc. Then, how can we obtain such information?

There are many channels (渠道)that we can make use of in doing this sort of work. Our concerned departments abroad can help us in making market investigations. Nowadays, our import and export corporations send their trade groups abroad every now and then. One of their purposes is to make market surveys on the spot.

Certainly, face-to-face talks with foreign businessmen are also important channels to get market information. The Chinese Export Commodities Fairs and some other fairs of similar nature as well as visits of foreign businessmen provide us with such opportunities. Of course, there are some other ways of making market investigations.

There are three common calendar systems in use by the United States higher education institutions. Semester Systems are one of them.

The academic year (学年) is divided into two terms, each of which provides for about 15 weeks of instruction (教学) plus a week for final examination. The fall semester, considered the first term of the academic year, usually begins in September or late August, and it is increasingly common for the term to start early enough to be completed before the two-week Christmas holiday. The second or spring semester usually begins sometime in January and ends in late May or early June. Most schools schedule a one or two-week vacation in March or April. A variation (变化)of the semester system being tried by some institutions is the \"4-1-4\" calendar, which has a four-month fall semester ending in December, a one-month short term in January for which students may enroll (注册)if they wish, and another four-month semester beginning early in February.
