Math had never been something I was good at since middle school. Classes became harder in high school, and I was even further from a math teacher’s dream student. So at the start of my freshman year, I had an aversion to math. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to do well, but simply that I didn’t think I was able to do well. “I can’t〞 became my state of mind in all things related (有关的) to math.

However, I was soon to learn that “I can’t〞 was not a choice in Mr. A’s class.

Mr. A always greeted (迎接) us with open arms as he said, “Welcome! Smile! It’s a great day to be alive! It was clear that Mr. A had a true passion (热情) not only for math but for teaching. If Mr. A ever experienced bad days in life, he never showed it. Mr. A greeted us with that same smile every day. He encouraged each student, from the top achiever to the “I can’t〞 student.

I found myself looking forward to math class, although I still hated the subject itself. Being in Mr. A’s presence made me feel good, as if I had the chance to succeed. As the year progressed, I spent increasingly more time on my homework, and I met with Mr. A weekly. My classmates began to do the same, and it became “cool〞 to have lunch and talk with Mr. A. We didn’t know it at the time, but he was changing our attitudes (态度).

Though my story is not one of overnight success and I didn’t become a straight-A math student, my hard work did begin to pay off and my grades slowly began to climb. There were hard times, of course. Difficult math questions sometimes succeeded in bringing me down, but Mr. A kept reminding (提醒) me, “Kate, smile! It’s a great day to be alive!〞

4. What does the underlined word\"aversion\"in paragraph 1 probably mean? A. Interest C. Dislike

The first week of September was a week that I had been expecting all summer. I didn’t want summer to end. But I was excited about going to high school for my first week.

Luckily, a kind senior showed up and guided me to my homeroom before I was late. I was happy to see that in a class of unfamiliar (不熟悉的) faces, the only open seat was next to my good friend,

Casey. My science teacher seemed like a good teacher. She was exciting and fun.

After finishing four periods without too much of a challenge, I didn’t feel too bad about ninth grade. However, the fifth period changed everything. I didn’t feel ready after all. My teacher’s name is Mr. Valassidis but he told us to call him Mr. V. Mr V told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. I love reading and writing, but come on, 40 ESSAYS? AP-level books? Now I was afraid.

The courses in high school seem like they’re going to get much harder, but they haven’t yet. Even though my classes look hard, they look really exciting too.

My eyes filled with tears as I thought about his new journey in the morning. My baby was off to high school.

I thought back to his first day of kindergarten (幼儿园). How he ran in excitement to the bus as my heart broke, how his smiling face in the window caused my tears to flow. I thought about how hard it was to let go of his hand and let him fly on his own for the first time. But this time, I found it was even harder.

Kindergarten is paper and glue sticks. High school is computer projects and technology you don’t understand. Kindergarten is Mother’s Day gifts made with handprints. High school is a funny card and a “Love you, Ma.〞 Kindergarten is afternoons at the park. High school is keys to the car. Kindergarten is excited talk about his day. High school is just “My day was fine, Ma.〞

Kindergarten is the beginning. High school is the beginning of the end. You know that your time with him at home will become less and less. The moments where your family will always feel complete at the end of the day are coming to an end. I’ve raised him to leave us. I’ve raised him to be independent (独立的), and I’m watching him pull away, one day at a time.

As I watched him board the bus to high school, my eyes filled with tears again and my heart ached more deeply than it did on his first day of kindergarten. The bus pulled away, and my eyes met his. He gave a quick wave (挥手) and mouthed, “Love you.〞 And then he made a silly face, and he wanted his mom to go back into the house now and set her mind at rest. I waved back and laughed. High school, here we come.

12. How did the author find sending her son to high school? A. It was more difficult than sending him to kindergarten. B. It would allow her more free time to enjoy life. C. It was much easier than she had expected. D. It would steal his love for her.

13. What’s the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 3? A. To tell interesting stories of her son.

B. To describe her feelings about her son. C To compare kindergarten and high school. D. To show it’s important for kids to be independent.

14. What does the author mean by saying “High school is the beginning of the end〞 in paragraph 4?

A. Her son is going to college. B. Her son will leave her someday. C. Her son has completed middle school. D. Her son must spend more time at school.

15. Why did the author’s son make a silly face on the bus? A. To stop the author from worrying about him. B. To make himself less nervous about high school. C. To keep the tears in his eyes secret from the author. D. To show his excitement about going to high school. A 13. C 14. B 15. A 【解析】

根据第一段内容“My eyes filled with tears as I thought about his new journey in the morning. My baby was off to high school.〞〔当我想起他早晨的新旅程时,我的眼里充满了泪水。我的孩子去上高中了。〕可知,作者今早要送孩子去高中,再根据第二段内容“I thought back to his first day of kindergarten (幼儿园). How he ran in excitement to the bus as my heart broke, how his smiling face in the window caused my tears to flow. I thought about how hard it was to let go of his hand and let him fly on his own for the first time. But this time, I found it was even harder.〞(我回想起他上幼儿园的第一天。当我心碎的时候,他是如何兴奋地跑到公共汽车上的,他在窗口的笑脸是如何让我流泪的。我想,放开他的手,让他第一次单独飞翔是多么困难。但这一次,我发现更难。)可知,对于作者来说,这次送孩子上高中要比送孩子上幼儿园的时候更难,由此可知,作者觉得送儿子上高中比送他去幼儿园更难。应选A项。 【13题详解】

推理判断题。根据第三段关键句“Kindergarten is paper and glue sticks. High school is computer projects and technology you don’t understand.〞〔幼儿园是纸和胶水棒。高中是你不懂的计算机工程和技术。〕和“Kindergarten is excited talk about his day. High school is just “My day was fine, Ma.〞〞(幼儿园是很兴奋地谈论他的一天。高中只是“我今天过得很好,妈妈。〞)可知,第三段中作者主要是把孩子在幼儿园的生活和高中的生活进行比照,告诉我们孩子上了高中后,和父母之间的共同语言更少了,由此可知,作者写第三段的目的是比拟幼儿园和高

中。应选C项。 【14题详解】

词义猜想题。根据第四段关键句“You know that your time with him at home will become less and less.〞〔你知道你和他在家的时间会越来越少。〕和“I’ve raised him to leave us. I’ve raised him to be independent (独立的), and I’m watching him pull away, one day at a time.〞(我把他养大让他离开我们。我把他培养成独立的人,我看着他离开,日复一日。)可知,在这段中作者表达的是孩子长大了,终有一天会离开家,学会独立,由此可知,作者在第4段中说“High school is the beginning of the end〞想要表达的意思是“她的儿子总有一天会离开她。〞应选B项。 【15题详解】

细节理解题。根据最后一段关键句“And then he made a silly face, and he wanted his mom to go back into the house now and set her mind at rest.〞〔然后他做了一个鬼脸,他想让他的妈妈现在回到家里,让她安心。)可知,儿子对着作者做了一个鬼脸,是想让妈知道他很好,想让妈妈安心,由此可知,作者的儿子在公共汽车上做了一个鬼脸是为了不让作者担忧他,让作者安心。应选A项。

It was a Saturday. Usually, Aman would be out playing with his friends. But today, he was busy in the kitchen. Since his mother was unwell, Aman had taken her place, preparing simple meals for his family. His little sister, Neelam, was the happiest.

“Aman, the dish you prepared for my lunch yesterday was so tasty that all my friends ate it up within minutes. I had to make do with eating their lunches,〞 said Neelam.

“Ha ha! Next time, remind me to prepare some extra for your friends as well,〞 said Aman. “I am happy that you have taken over the kitchen duties now. Imagine having to eat Dad’s boring food for a whole week, like the bread he used to make for us last year when Mom had gone out of town! said Neelam.

Dad, who had just walked into the kitchen, overheard Neelam’s words and asked in mock (假装的) anger, “Who is complaining (抱怨) about my cooking skills?〞

“Not complaining, Dad, just kidding,〞 said Neelam.

The three laughed. Aman then prepared tea for his parents and served it to them. “Thank you, Aman, for helping Dad with the housework while I have been unwell,〞 said Mom. “I hope it has not been too much trouble for you. Hope you are not missing out on your schoolwork because of this.〞

“Don’t worry, Mom. You just relax. I have more than enough time to study in the evenings,〞 said Aman.

In a couple of days, Aman’s mother felt better and took over the kitchen duties.

Aman continued to help around the kitchen by cutting the vegetables and preparing the soup. Mom taught him a few new recipes (菜谱). Even Neelam helped with whatever little she could like washing the vegetables and peeling (削皮) potatoes.

“Aman, now that I am well, you should start focusing on your studies again,〞 said Mom. “I love cooking, Mom. It is fun and also helps me relax before I sit down to study,〞 replied Aman. 注意

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

A couple of months later, Aman’s school organised a day-long picnic. The place was a few kilometers away from the city. It was quiet and beautiful. As the kids were enjoying themselves in nature, one of the teachers got a phone call. It was from the cooks, who were supposed to prepare the lunch. Their car had broken down and by the time they got there, it would be way past lunchtime. The teachers were very worried since they weren’t skilled at cooking for a large number of people.

While the teachers discussed what to do. Aman stepped forwards and said, “If you do not mind, I can help.〞 The teachers were all surprised. But seeing a few other kids also wanting to help, the teachers agreed that they could have a try. Aman then divided his friends into groups and gave each group a task. To make it more fun, Aman and his friends sang songs and played word games as they cooked. Before everyone knew it, lunch was ready! Even though it was simpler than the one planned for the picnic, everyone ate it with great enjoyment. 【解析】
