special、especial、particular、 specific、peculiar 这组形容词都可表示“特别的”、“特殊的”意思。

一、 special “特殊的”、“特别的”、“专门的”，普通用词，指在某方面具有不同于一般的特别之处（not ordinary or usual）突出与一般不同。也可表示有“特有的”，“独具特色的”或“特设的”，“专门的”。

1）Is there anything special that you'd like to do today? 今天你有什么特别的事要办?

2）Passengers should tell the airline in advance if they have any special dietary needs.

乘客如有特殊的饮食需求应该提前告诉航空公司。

3）I don't expect special treatment － I just want to be treated fairly. 我并不期望受到特别对待 ―― 我只想得到公正对待。

4）The restaurant serves certain special dishes which you can find nowhere else. 这家餐馆提供一些特色菜，你在别的地方找不到。

specific “特殊的”、“特异的”，强调奇特性和特异性，指某物与其他事物有明显的区别或针对某物而言是特定的，特有的。

二、这四个词，都可作“特别”解，但概念不尽相同。

peculiar 含有“与众不同”，“独特”的意思。常用来表示“个体所独有而与同类其它事物相异（甚至于令人感到怪异）的意义。可用来表示特有的兴趣，习惯，友谊，场合等。例如：

He is peculiar in character. 他性格古怪。

This is a custom peculiar to people in that province. 这是该省人们特有的一种风俗。

particular 含有“个别”或“分别考虑”的意味，着重强调本身的“特殊”常用于表示特殊事物。例如：

There is nothing particular in the newspaper. 报上没特别的消息。 It is used only on a particular day. 这东西只在某个特殊的日子才使用。

special 含有“非一般的”，“少见”或“专门”的意思，常指一般场合下的特殊，是比较普遍的用语，常和particular通用。例如：

It is worthy of special mention. 这值得特别提起。 It is of special importance. 这是特别重要的。

但在特殊场合下的“特殊”情况，则往往用particular. 如：

In that particular case, you should give her a hand. 那个特殊情况下，你应帮她一把。

especial 意思是“特别的”，与special同义，但special的应用较普遍。especial是古老用法，现在差不多已被special取代了。例如：
