Maybe you know floods, droughts, earthquakes , sandstorms amd so on. But have you ever heard of typhoons?

Typhoons are some of the worst storms, usually around the Pacific ocean and the South China Sea. Most happen in July , August and September.

How does a typhoon happen? When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates (蒸发) into the air. This makes the air hotter. When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into the sky. Then , cooler air around it rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets warmer, it starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in circles(圆圈), and it keeps moving higher in the sky. The warmer the air gets, the quicker the wind moves. And when the wind moves faster than 30 metres a second, a typhoon begins.

A typhoon has two parts. One is called the “eye” . In the eye, the wind does not move so fast. The other part is the wall of clouds around the eye. This is where is the strongest wind and hardest rains are.

Men have travelled ever since thousands of years ago. In old times, they did not travel for pleasure(快乐) but to find better places to live in. They traveled on foot. Their journeys were long and tiring. They lived in the open air. Before long(不久以后), they found easier ways for travelling. They rode on the backs of their horses. They cut big holes in trees to live in. When they learned to use bits of wood as paddles(踏板), they were able to go across water. As travelling was getting easier, men began to travel for pleasure and excitement. Now there are cars, wide roads, fast trains, big ships and planes. They are all very convenient (便利地). Isn’t it wonderful? However, travelling is not always easy. If you want to travel, you need both money and time.

My friend Jimmy has his way of travelling—he does his travelling from an armchair. He thinks of travelling down into the sea like a shell(贝壳), it is a wonderful world under the water. Have you ever dreamt of winning the lottery (彩票)? Most people will dream of fast cars, large houses, and not having to work any more. In real life, however, that’s not always what happens.

Dr H Van Haan, a writer of several books on lottery winners, says, “Winning the lottery doesn’t change people’s lives as much as we imagine.” Most lottery winners keep their jobs, but often find that they lose their friends. Their friends will often ask them for money and these “friends” very often get angry if they don’t share the money.

Lottery winners spend most of their first one million dollars on travelling.

However, when the early excitement of travelling around the world has disappeared, the happiness that the money brings also disappears. In less than a year after winning, most winners say that they are not happier than before.

Too much money can make people unhappy, especially for those who are not used to it. One study shows that more than 30% of lottery winners lost most of their money in the first five years and many of them had money problems. Another report shows that a lot of people were happily married before they won the lottery, but they had problems with their partners after winning the money.

So, you see, although most people dream of winning the lottery, the dream can sometimes turn into a nightmare. 16. When people win a lot of money, they usually dream of __________. A. buying an expensive car B. staying away from their work C. owning a large house D. all the above
